The Skills Training and Rehabilitation Society (STARS) has collaborated with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to distribute wheat seed packages to 8000 farmers in the Sayed Abad, Chak, Jaghatu, Maidan Share, and Jalreez districts of Wardak province. These packages consist of 50 kg of improved wheat seed, 50 kg of Urea, and 50 kg of DAP, all of which have been provided with the financial support of FAO. In addition to the distribution of these packages, technical training sessions have also been conducted for the beneficiaries. These training sessions have covered various aspects of wheat cultivation, including irrigation techniques, disease management, integrated pest management, and wheat seed storage.

Earthquake-affected children are provided with quality education through the community-based education system in Paktika and Khost provinces.

The project is supported by UNICEF and implementation is ongoing by STARS.

The children in Gayan, Naka, Zerok and Bermal districts of Paktika province and Spera district of Khost province got access to education.

In these districts community-based education classes are established, teaching and learning materials distributed, teachers are contracted, learning facilities are provided and eligible schools are surveyed for renovation.

This project was implemented in Wardak province the total direct beneficiaries were 9500 vulnerable farmers including 4500 small farmers and land owner beneficiaries including the most vulnerable smallholder farming families by assisting with animal feed package (1000 HHs Chak – 1000 HHs – Hesa Awal Behsod, 1000 HHs – Jaghatu and 1500-HHs in Sayed Abad) and 5000 farmers who lost part of their production due to drought, flood, conflict and plant diseases and COVID-19 by assisting with wheat seed package (1000-HHs Hesa Awal Beshsood, 1000-HHs Maydanshahr, 1000-HHs Chak, 1000-HHs Daymirdad, and 1000-HHs in Jaghatu districts) of Wardak province and STARS distributed 50 Kg of wheat and 50 kg of Urea as a package per HHs, Additionally, the project organized capacity-building training for all those farmers who received the agriculture and livestock inputs. Implementation of the mentioned project will be increasing the agriculture production in Wardak province, secure the food situation, and reduce farmer’s problems concerning the unavailability of wheat seed at the village level.

STARS implemented this project in two districts of Wardak province the total direct beneficiaries of which were 2500 vulnerable farmers, 1700 in Sayed Abad, and 800 vulnerable marginal herding, landless, women-headed, and persons with disability in Sayd Abad and Nurkh districts of Wardak province.  STARS distributed 50 Kg of wheat and 50 kg of Urea as a package per HHs, Additionally, the project organized capacity-building training for all those farmers who received the agriculture inputs. The training comprised wheat cultivation/agronomic practices – using appropriate IEC materials and Sensitization, adoption of COVID-19 safety practices, protection massage at the household level, during agricultural/other livelihood activities, IPM/marketing for drought-affected farmers, thus the project supports the timely response to the 2500 farmer needs. Implementation of the mentioned project will be increasing the agriculture production in Wardak province, secure the food situation, and reduce farmer’s problems concerning the unavailability of wheat seed at the village level.

STARS with the financial support of UNICEF has completed the three-round cash distribution assistance and the project covered about 29064 most vulnerable beneficiaries according to the project criteria (family with pregnant women, lactating women for under two years infant, children with a disability under 12, families with women headed HH) in (Jalrez, Sayed Abad, Nerkh, Daimirdad, Chak, Hesa Awal Behsud, Markaz Behsud, Jaghato, and Maidan Shahr) districts of Wardak province. The distribution of 33800 AFN to each vulnerable family was made in the presence of the representatives of relevant provincial departments and village elders. Cash transfers change lives and strengthen the local economy, all while ensuring that people do not go hungry.

FAO will provide and STARS will distribute agriculture and livestock inputs under this project to more than 14,587 farmers who have been affected by various natural disasters in the field of agriculture and livestock in 7 districts of Maidan Wardak province (Sayed Abad, Nerkh, Daimirdad, Chak, Hesa Awal Behsud, Markaz Behsud, and Maidan Shahr). The assistance includes wheat seed and fertilizer, vegetables, livestock, poultry, and small farming tools package.

The proposed (Emergency Food Security Project through Cash for Food Activities in two districts of Wardak Province) started on 10.02.2022 and will provide urgently emergency food assistance to ensure 2072 people’s survival and prevent mortality in the Jaghato, and Day Mirdad districts of Wardak province. STARS will distribute the cash for food in two rounds. In each round, 80USD will be given to every household, and STARS will use the HAWALA system. The enactment of the project started consultation meetings with key central and provincial stakeholders. Upon the approval, the project teams held a series of meetings with stakeholders notably the food security cluster, regional governor, and district authorities respectively, followed by further consultations and mobilizations of the community and committees. According to the market assessment result, the majority of the survey respondents said food items available in the local market and the price of the food items were relatively suitable. And the community has easy access to the local market. They can buy 80$ a bag of 50 kg flour that cost 2500 AFN in the market, a bag of 24 kg rice 2000 AFN, a bottle of 5-liter oil 900 AFN, 7 kg beans 700 AFN, 1kg tea 300 AFN, 7 kg sugar 400 AFN and 1 kg salt 50 AFN which meets one and half month’s basic food items needs of the beneficiaries. Over 50% of the activities have been accomplished, including Coordination, Mobilization, Assessment, and the first round of cash distribution in both districts.
